Violence erupted in Pakistan’s Sindh province after Allama Ali Sher Haideri, the chief of outlawed Sunni militant organization Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, was shot dead in the province’s Khairpur district, according to an Urdu language daily.

Ali Sher Haider was the head of Millat-e-Islami organization, the new name for the outlawed anti-Shi’ite militant organization Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan. He was killed along with one of his aides at Pir Jo Goth village in Khairpur district on Monday.

The Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan is blamed for a series of attacks against Shi’ite Muslims in Pakistan over the past two decades.

According to a report in the Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Jang, anti-Shi’ite riots were reported in Karachi, while angry protesters forced shops, educational institutions and government offices to close down in several other cities of the province. Road traffic and railway services were disrupted at several places in Sindh province.

Qari Shafiq, a spokesman for the Sunni organization Ahle Sunnat Wal Jama’at, said that nearly 50-60 people have been arrested in connection with the protests. Sunni clerics in Pakistan have called for three days of mourning over Allama Haideri’s killing.

According to a report in the Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Islam, protests were also organized by Sunni Muslim groups in Punjab and North West Frontier Province.

Allama Haideri is the fifth leader of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan to be killed by gunmen as his predecessors Haq Nawaz Jhangvi, Esar ul Qasmi, Zia-ur-Rehman Farooqi and Azam Tariq also fell to Sunni-Shi’ite conflicts.
